Quick answer: Open Minecraft Java Edition, click Multiplayer, click Add Server, and enter unstablesmp.io. No port.
Before you start
- You need a legitimate, purchased Minecraft account. Cracked launchers and shared accounts are not allowed.
- Unstable SMP supports 1.21.1+. If your launcher only offers old versions, update it first.
- You do not need a whitelist, an application, or a friend request.
- You do not need a port. Unstable SMP takes the plain address only.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minecraft edition | Java Edition |
| Version | 1.21.1+ |
| Server address | unstablesmp.io |
| Port | Not needed |
| Whitelist | Not required |
| Cost | Free |
Step 1 - Launch Minecraft
Open Minecraft Java Edition from the official launcher. Make sure it is signed into the account you intend to play on, because that is the account your progress is tied to.
Step 2 - Open Multiplayer
On the main menu, click Multiplayer. This is the same menu used for every other server, so if you have joined one before you already know where you are.
Step 3 - Add the server
Click Add Server, then fill in two fields:
- Server Name - any label you like. Unstable SMP makes it easy to find later.
- Server Address - enter unstablesmp.io and nothing else. No
https://, no slash, no port.
This is the step people get wrong. Copy the address exactly as written: unstablesmp.io. Anything appended to it will stop the connection working.
Step 4 - Join
Click Done, then select the server from your list and click Play. Unstable SMP has up to 14,000 player slots, so you will be joining a busy server rather than an empty one.
Step 5 - What happens next
Once you connect you spawn into the survival world and can start gathering. New players get a short protection window after their first join, and the spawn area has orientation markers worth reading before you travel far.
If it does not work
Work through these in order, because between them they resolve almost every connection problem:
- Confirm the address reads exactly unstablesmp.io, with no port.
- Confirm your client version. Unstable SMP advertises 1.21.1+.
- Delete any old saved entry for the server and add it again. Stale entries keep the old address even after you edit them.
- Restart the launcher fully before retrying - closing the window does not always stop the process.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy, then retry.
