How to Join Unstable SMP on Java

Open Minecraft Java Edition, add unstablesmp.io, and join. No port.

Updated

Java quick answer: Open Multiplayer, click Add Server, and enter unstablesmp.io. Leave the port field empty.

Add the server in five steps

  1. Open Minecraft Java Edition.
  2. Click Multiplayer.
  3. Click Add Server.
  4. Enter unstablesmp.io as the server address.
  5. Click Done, then select the server and join.

Do not add a port. If Minecraft shows a port field, leave it blank. Anything appended to unstablesmp.io is the single most common cause of "Failed to connect to the server".

Check the saved entry

The server name is just a label; use Unstable SMP. The address field should contain only unstablesmp.io - no https://, no trailing slash, no path and no port. Saving the entry lets you reuse it from Multiplayer later.

Supported Java version

The live server advertises 1.21.1+ and runs Paper 26.3. Unstable SMP normally serves several versions through its proxy, so an older 1.21+ client will usually still connect. A status label is not a promise that every client version is accepted, so if you are refused, check the current announcement in the Discord before changing your installation.

Authentication problems

Unstable SMP requires a legitimate Minecraft account. Cracked launchers, offline mode and shared logins are not supported and will result in a ban.

  1. Close Minecraft completely - check your taskbar and system tray for a background process.
  2. Open the official launcher and confirm it is signed into the account you intend to play on.
  3. Click Play and wait for the full restart rather than resuming a running instance.
  4. Retry the connection. If authentication still fails, open a ticket in the Discord with your username and the exact error.

Never share your Minecraft password, session tokens or launcher details with anyone offering to "fix" your connection. No legitimate support tool needs them.

Performance on a large server

With up to 14,000 slots, the biggest performance win is a non-cheat optimisation mod. Unstable SMP explicitly allows the standard performance set:

  • Sodium - the biggest single improvement to frame rate.
  • Lithium and Starlight - server-side tick and lighting optimisation.
  • Fabric API and Mod Menu - required for Fabric mods to load correctly.
  • Zoomify - a plain zoom keybind, and the easiest way to screenshot distant builds.

Do not install any client that renders entities, blocks or players through walls, automates combat, or modifies movement beyond normal. Those are cheats and they are banned - see the Unstable SMP rules.

For the standard multiplayer interface, Mojang's own reference is how to play on a Minecraft server.
