Is Unstable SMP Safe?

Two questions get asked about any server with a large player base: is it real, and is it safe to join. Here are the honest answers for Unstable SMP, including the parts that are not purely positive.
Is it a real server?
It runs on a real network with a live player count in the thousands, a real Discord with a real community, and a real store selling optional ranks. It is not a front for anything, and it does not ask for money to join.
The one thing that causes confusion is that several other websites use the Unstable SMP name and publish addresses that belong to different servers. If you have been told to add a Bedrock port, you are on one of those. The only address is unstablesmp.io.
Does it ask for my account?
It asks for a legitimate Minecraft account, and that is the only thing it asks for. A legitimate account means one you bought from Mojang and log into through the official launcher. The server never sees your password: the launcher handles authentication, and the server only learns your username and your public key.

Is it safe from hackers?
No server is free of cheaters. What matters is what happens when they appear, and Unstable SMP bans KillAura, X-ray, reach, ESP, fly, dupes and exploits. Optimisation and cosmetic mods are explicitly allowed, so you can run Sodium without any risk to your account. That balance is deliberate: a rule set that bans every mod drives honest players away, and one that bans nothing protects nobody.

The honest downsides
A server this size is not a quiet place. Expect:
- PvP. It is enabled and combat is real. Your base can be raided if you make it a target.
- Enormous player density. Thousands of people in one world means crowded markets, a lot of chat, and places where griefing happens. A small server is calmer.
- A learning curve. The player economy and the geography are complex enough that a first session is disorienting. The wiki exists for exactly this reason.
- Java only. If you play on console, mobile or Bedrock, this is not for you, and there is no workaround.
And one upside that is not obvious: because there is no whitelist and no purchase, you can connect right now and see whether you like it, with nothing to lose.
