"Unstable SMP is down" is the conclusion most people jump to when a connection fails, and it is almost never the right one. This server runs for tens of thousands of player sessions a day. When you cannot connect, the cause is on your side roughly nine times out of ten.
Check whether the server is actually down
The live player count on the homepage reads straight from the server. If it shows a number rather than "Status unavailable", the server is up and answering. The server IP page shows the same thing.
If both show a number, the server is fine and the problem is yours.

The fix that works most of the time
- Delete the saved Unstable SMP entry. Do not edit it. A stale entry keeps the old address even when the text looks right.
- Quit the Minecraft launcher completely. Closing the game window does not always stop the process.
- Turn off any VPN, proxy or private DNS.
- Reopen the launcher, click Multiplayer, Add Server, and enter unstablesmp.io fresh with no port.
- Join.
