# How to join Unstable SMP

Unstable SMP is a public Minecraft **Java Edition** survival multiplayer (SMP)
server. The server address is `unstablesmp.io`.

## Requirements

- Minecraft **Java Edition** (PC, Mac or Linux).
- Client version **1.21.1+** or newer. The server runs Paper 26.3.
- A legitimate, purchased Minecraft account. Cracked launchers, offline-mode
clients and shared logins are not allowed and result in a permanent ban.
- No whitelist and no application. No purchase is required to play.

## Steps

1. Launch Minecraft Java Edition and sign in.
2. Click **Multiplayer** on the main menu.
3. Click **Add Server**.
4. Enter `unstablesmp.io` as the server address. **Do not add a port** - Java uses
default port 25565 through DNS, so the hostname alone is correct.
5. Name the entry anything, click **Done**, then **Join Server**.

## If it does not connect

1. Check the client version is 1.21.1+ or newer.
2. Delete any saved entry for this server and add it again. A stale entry
keeps the old address even after you edit the text.
3. Fully restart the launcher, not just the game window.
4. Turn off any VPN or proxy and retry.
5. Try a different network to rule out a local block.

## Editions that will NOT work

Bedrock Edition, console and mobile are **not supported**. There is no Bedrock
listener and no Bedrock port, so port 19132 will not connect. Any site
claiming Unstable SMP has a Bedrock port is describing a different server.
